Stupid Filipino Politics

For the first time in Philippine basketball history, the formation of a national team would take about 4 years. This probably is the only good thing going in this crazy country of ours. Tryouts for the national team were held early this year and as of now, the coaching staff has narrowed down the selection by inviting about 20 players to join the pool.

The national team has played impressively in the tournaments they have joined this year. They defeated the defending champs of the Las Vegas Global Hoops Summit, Long Beach Jam, which is comprised of African-American players. It is a fact that these guys are bigger and more athletic, but our team held their own against these guys. And besides, Long Beach, California has been known to produce great basketball players.

The best achievement of the national team so far was winning the title of the recently concluded Sultan's Cup held in Brunei. After losing its first game against Toshiba of Japan, the team bounced back by winning their last 6 games, 4 in the eliminations and the semis and finals. Two of their wins was against the South Korean Knights and their semis match against the same opponent who dealt them their only defeat, Toshiba-Japan. As an added bonus, they went up against the Alaska Aces (from the PBA) who defeated the SK Knights in the semis.

Unfortunately for the Philippines, FIBA has suspended the Philippines from participating in events sanctioned by FIBA due to the POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) - BAP (Basketball Association of the Philippines) controversy. This denies the Philippine team a chance to compete in the qualifying tournament for the FIBA-Asia tourney next month.

It is best that this issue will be immediately resolved since the target of this whole basketball program is the 2008 summer olympics. But if the Philippines cannot participate in qualifying tournaments held by FIBA, the 4-year program would all be put to waste.

So I hope that this stupid politicians resolve this issue and put all their fuckin issues aside and not deny the country of regaining basketball glory that we once had. Well, at least in Asia. Kasi dito lang naman proud ang mga Pilipino, pag magaling tayo sa sports gaya ng boxing with Manny Pacquiao. Personally, I think this matter should be prioritized over the impeachment thing. Wala rin naman mangyayari dyan. At least in basketball, nothing bad would come out if the matter is resolved. Unlike sa impeachment, kung mahinto, may rally. Kung mapatuloy, may rally pa rin. Walang kwenta either way...
